Jeep Renegade Concept

Quick Facts:
  • Small 2-seater is designed for all-weather fun.
  • Power comes from batteries and small diesel engine powering electric motors.
  • Major components are molded in one piece to simplify construction.
  • Renegade isn't painted -- the color is molded into the composite body panels.

Looking like a modern incarnation of the classic dune-buggy, the new Jeep Renegade Concept shows what it would be like to go off-roading and still be environmentally friendly.

Moving the Renegade forward are electric motors at each axle, capable of moving the little Jeep up to 40 miles on batteries alone.

If you need to go farther, there's also a small diesel engine that increases the range to some 400 miles before you need to fill up with fuel again.

And if you think diesel engines are synonymous with clouds of heavy black smoke, it's time to think again. The Jeep uses a modern 1.5 liter, 3-cylinder diesel that is far cleaner than diesels of the past.

Inside, the two people will be surrounded in various plastic, soy-based and other recyclable or eco-friendly materials. The parts are made with advanced new molding techniques that could find their way into future production cars.

Even the exterior color of the car is part of the plastic panels to avoid using the solvents found in conventional automotive paints.

While the Renegade remains only a concept for now, some of its features are not too far away from future Jeep production models.
