LAZURNE TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A construction employee pinned in equipment while working in Lazurne Township died Monday afternoon. The Fayette County coroner identified the man as Gilbert Eutsey, 58, of Dawson, an employee of Cranberry Township-based Mashuda Corp. The job was clearing more trees to put in the newest section of the Mon-Fayette Expressway. The coroner said Eutsey was pronounced dead at the scene on Telegraph Road shortly after 3 p.m. after a movable pipe inside a wood-chipper machine crushed Eutsey's chest and he couldn't breathe. The coroner said Eutsey died from compression asphyxiation in an accidental death.
"It's for chipping the trees that they cut off the project, and as far as I know, one of the chutes on it was clogged and he was cleaning the chute and somehow the chute closed," Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission spokesman Michael Houser said. The state police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating whether proper procedures were in place and if they were followed by all employees.
