PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Now is the time to cash in if you need or want a new car. Dealers are looking to clear their lots to make room for 2009 models. But if saving money on gas is the No. 1 priority on your list, WTAE Channel 4 Action News takes a look at the top six performing cars for their class.Who would have thought that driving a sporty Audi TT Roadster could save you money on gas? But Dave Stewart of Day Audi said the model may be good for your wallet.
"The Audi TT has a 2-liter engine which gives you a lot better fuel efficiency, but still has 200 horsepower," Stewart said. With a six-speed transmission, the TT gets 22 city miles and 29 highway on one tank, making it the best two-seater in its class. But if you need slightly more room, try the 2008 Mini Cooper convertible. At 23 city miles and 32 miles per gallon on the highway, the mini compact car is the best way to go.For a subcompact car, check out the 2008 Toyota Yaris. This model gets 29 city miles and 36 miles per gallon on the highway, with room for a friend. If you're in the market for a hybrid, take a look at the Honda Civic. Listed as the best 2008 compact car, the Civic gets 40 miles per gallon in the city and 45 miles per gallon on the highway. The only problem, Steve Werksman of Valley Honda said, is trying to find one."Can't keep those. Good three-month (wait) for the Civic hybrid because of the fuel economy issues in America. I'd like to have 50 of them, but I can't get one of them," Werksman said. The Toyota Prius hybrid gets 48 city miles and 45 miles per gallon on the highway, making it the most fuel efficient vehicle for 2008.And finally, if you need to seat a family, you'll want to test-drive the 2008 Honda Accord.
