The body of a man who went out for a walk on Tuesday night and never returned was found in the Allegheny River in Westmoreland County.

Police in Arnold said they were tipped off to Michael Joseph Karpinski's whereabouts by some fishermen, who found the missing man's cell phone by the fireman's dock in Arnold.

Karpinski, 42, of New Kensington, went out for a walk on Monday night. Karpinski told his sister he needed some fresh air after suffering from the flu for a few days. When he didn't come back, family members called police.

Officers found Karpinski's body in the river, about 10 feet from the dock where his cell phone was found.

Friends and family were tearful along the river banks as police interviewed witnesses, trying to figure out what happened to Karpinski. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

"Me and my uncle…went down to do some fishing. We were sitting there and we heard a telephone ringing. He went over to the shoreline and he seen a phone laying there and we just picked it up. And he went to the first name in there because we didn't know whose it was. And some family members I guess came running down over the hill," said Doug Myers, one of the people who found Karpinski's cell phone.

Karpinski was the manager of a local supermarket.
