AMBRIDGE, Pa. -- Parents and school officials met in a contentious gathering Wednesday night after three police officers were hurt during a fight at Ambridge Area High School on Tuesday morning.Police said the officers were trying to break up the fight between two juveniles. The police chief said he hurt his knee during the incident. Two students will be charged with aggravated assault, police said. Parents claimed the student fight stemmed from two racially-motivated school fights.
Parents at the meeting talked about fighting, race and security concerns at the school."Put your head down in shame! Put your head down in shame," a parent said. Some parents said they plan to pull their kids out of class, saying school officials are not doing enough to protect the kids."She didn't go to school today because she feels that one of the kids sending text messages -- saying that if any (expletive) go to school on Thursday, that they will be shot -- she's scared," said Valerie Whitaker, a parent."Your parents need to instill values in you. This is 2008. It's time to change. We should be changed by now already," said Frank Smith, a parent. The district is sending out a letter to parents this week indicating that security officers will now carry handheld metal detectors to screen students each morning. The high school will also establish conflict resolution groups.
