PITTSBURGH -- With the holiday shopping season near, Call 4 Action reporter Aaron Saykin has amassed a list of simple ways shoppers can save $1,000 before the end of the year.According to financial experts at Kiplinger, consumers would be $1,000 richer by Christmas morning if they just tweaked some of their buying habits.“Sit down, write it down, make a plan -- that's what you should be doing anyways, right?” said Paige Beal, a marketing expert at Point Park University.
Dining out one less time per month can save as much as $120.Making fewer trips to the grocery store can also help.According to financial experts at Kiplinger, shoppers make $10 worth of impulse buys per visit.Making only one trip a week can save up to $160.Dropping extra services from cable and phone bills can save another $100.Another way to save is to stop buying items at work.Buying three Diet Cokes a day can add up to $15 per week. That’s $150 between now and Christmas.Bringing a lunch to work and not buying coffee will save another $200.At home, turning the thermostat down 2 degrees for two months will reduce costs by another $60.Adjusting tax withholdings is another option. The average person can take home $450, but it will result in a smaller refund next year.Add everything up and consumers are looking at close to another $1,100 in their pocket.
