Shady McCoy Says It Again: He's Not Leaving Pitt

Running Back Wants To Return For Junior Year

For anybody who didn't hear it the first time, allow LeSean McCoy to repeat himself: "Shady" isn't planning to go pro.

"For me, man, I don't feel we've accomplished enough here yet. I want to put Pittsburgh where it used to be at," McCoy said Friday after running for 183 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 19-15 victory over West Virginia.

  • Earlier in the week, as Pitt was preparing for the "Backyard Brawl" rivalry game at Heinz Field, McCoy told reporters much the same thing.

"I'm talented, but right now, I'm in school and I'm looking to stay here. I'm not really pushing to go anywhere," he said Tuesday. "When you look at the pros, guys like Ray Lewis and Brian (Urlacher), that's their job. When you're in college, you can just have fun and play ball."

Though only a sophomore, the 20-year-old McCoy spent a year in prep school before coming to Pitt. He's eligible to declare for the NFL draft, where he'd almost certainly be a first-round pick with 2,636 career rushing yards and 34 touchdowns.

But if McCoy returns to Pitt for his junior season, he could turn into a dominant player and would likely be a preseason candidate for the Heisman Trophy.

"Coach (Dave) Wannstedt, he'll tell me when it's time. And I feel I'm not ready yet," McCoy said on Tuesday.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound running back thinks staying in school at least another year would benefit him physically.

"I'm the one who has to take all the hits. I'm still a young kid," he said. "I think, my size -- I can get a little bigger and stronger, and I can become a better blocker. My knowledge of the game is coming on faster than I thought, and that's pretty good for me."

West Virginia fans hope McCoy changes his mind. He has 331 yards and two TDs in two games against the Mountaineers.

Pitt is guaranteed of playing in its first bowl game in five seasons under Wannstedt. Seven starters on offense will be back in 2009, and McCoy wants to be part of that team.

"We'll definitely be loaded, and a lot of reasons why guys come back instead of going to the pros is the team that they'll have the next year," McCoy said. "When I look at our team next year, we're going to be stacked."

Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald left Pitt following his sophomore season in 2003, when he was the runner-up to Oklahoma's Jason White in Heisman Trophy voting. Fitzgerald was the third overall pick in the NFL draft that year.
